Team Job Descriptions

The Woodshop is always looking for members to help out. If there are no open positions that are a good fit for you, please speak to one of the team members about how you can contribute. If you meet most, but not all of the requirements talk to us. If you are willing to learn, we are willing to teach. All positions come with immunity from the chores list, and the ability to create either single month or recurring immunity if justified. This list is a work in progress.

Team Lead

Current Incumbent: Neil Eaton

Responsibilities

  • Ensures that the Woodshop team is working effectively.
  • Monitors the Woodshop for gaps in tools, training or processes.
  • Liaisons with the board to request funding, and keep them informed of Woodshop happenings.
  • Actively seeks opportunities to improve the Woodshop.
  • Ensures that tools are working and safe.
  • Leads decision making process on purchasing or accepting donated tools.

Requirements

  • Broad knowledge of woodworking practice.
  • Understanding of tool repair and maintenance.
  • Ability to communicate with a diverse range of members and listen to their concerns.
  • Actively seeks out other opinions before making key decisions.
  • Ability to do basic electrical and mechanical work on tools is nice to have.
  • Regularly in the Woodshop.
  • Ability to purchase items at hardware stores or online and submit receipts for reimbursement.

Assistant to the Team Lead

Current Incumbent: Open

Responsibilities

  • Provides back up to the team lead
  • Maintains the tool tag system
  • Maintains signage throughout the wood shop
  • Updates the kwartzlab TV with Woodshop news
  • Ensures that the Woodshop team positions are filled

Requirements

  • Broad knowledge of woodworking practice.
  • Actively seeks out other opinions before making key decisions.
  • Regularly in the Woodshop.
  • Ability to purchase items or services at physical stores or online and submit receipts for reimbursement.
  • Basic computer skills.

Inspector of Blades

Current Incumbent: Open

Responsibilities

  • Keep all power tool blades clean, sharp and in good condition.
  • At present the machines include:
    • table saw
    • band saws
    • mitre saw,
    • circular saw
    • jig saw
    • planer
    • jointer
  • Controls the budget for purchasing and/or sharpening blades.
  • Takes blades to be sharpened and/or purchase replacements as necessary.
  • Change and adjust blades on all power tools. Training will be provided.
  • Researches the best options for cost and quality and maintain the information on the wiki page.

Requirements

  • Some knowledge of power tool basics.
  • Comfort with basic machine maintenance operations.
  • Regularly in the Woodshop.
  • Ability to purchase items or services at physical stores or online and submit receipts for reimbursement.
  • Basic computer skills.

Director of Housekeeping

Current Incumbent: Open

Responsibilities

  • Manages all housekeeping activities including cleaning, emptying garbage cans and scrap bins, and emptying dust collector bags. Director is not expected to do the work, but to ensure that it happens in conjunction with the owner of the chores list.
  • Works with the Procurer of Consumables to get supplies as needed.
  • Maintain a list of necessary activities and reasonable intervals on the wiki page.

Requirements

  • Regularly in the Woodshop.
  • Basic computer skills.

Procurer of Consumables

Current Incumbent: Open

Responsibilities

  • Purchasing all consumables except power tool blades for the Woodshop.
  • Control the consumables budget.
  • Monitors consumable use and alerts the team lead if it is excessive or is expected to exceed the budget.
  • Maintain a list of consumables best locations to purchase them, and normal usage levels on the wiki.

Consumables include, but are not limited to:

    • sandpaper sheets
    • specialty sandpaper for hand held tools
    • sanding belts
    • glue
    • screws

Requirements

  • Regularly in the Woodshop.
  • Ability to purchase items or services at physical stores or online and submit receipts for reimbursement.
  • Basic computer skills.

Greaser of Tools

Current Incumbent: Open

Responsibilities

  • Does routine preventative maintenance of large tools, except the CNC routers.
  • Cleans out accumulated dust, particularly on the band saws and table saw.
  • Checks power cords for damage, missing ground pins etc. on all corded tools
  • Maintains a list on the wiki of all maintenance tasks with frequency and instructions.
  • Inspects dust collection for clogged hoses or broken parts.

Requirements

  • Basic mechanical aptitude.
  • In the Woodshop at least once per month.
  • Basic computer skills.

Master of training

Current Incumbent: Open

Responsibilities

  • Ensures that all tools, except the CNC routers have appropriate training.
  • Maintains the training / tool permission list on Kos.
  • Maintains training documentation on the wiki and elsewhere.
  • Ensures that adequate numbers of trainers are available for each tool.

Requirements

  • Broad knowledge of woodworking practice.
  • Basic computer skills.

Keeper of the CNC routers

Current Incumbent: David Krock

Responsibilities

  • Ensures that both CNC routers and the associated software are in working condition.
  • Maintains training for the CNC routers.
  • Maintains documentation on the wiki covering training and maintenance of the CNC routers.
  • Ensures that adequate numbers of trainers are available.
  • Maintains the training / CNC permission list on Kos.

Requirements

  • Moderate computer skills.
  • Competent with programming, operating, and maintaining a CNC router.
  • Regularly uses one or both CNC routers.

Overseer of the Assembly Area

Current Incumbent: Open

Responsibilities

  • Maintains glue and clamps in the assembly area.
  • Ensures that clutter and junk does not accumulate in the assembly area.
  • Enforces time limits on table and shelf use
  • Regularly inspects tables and covers for damage.
  • Replaces covers when they become unusable.

Requirements

  • Regularly in the lab.
  • Willingness to be assertive to owners of non-conforming stored items when necessary.
