Purchasing Filament from Lab
The 3D Printer Team keeps a few extra spools of Bambu Lab PLA on hand that can be purchased by members. When available, each spool is $35, paid in cash to a member of the 3D Printing team.
If you are interested in purchasing a spool, tag @3dprintingteam on the #area-3d-printing channel to check which colours are available.
Requesting New Filaments
The filaments that have been approved for use at Kwartzlab all meet the following criteria:
- The filament is easy to print and works with either Generic or Bambu-provided profiles
- The filament material doesn't generate strong fumes or pose a health hazard
- The filament does not cause excessive wear and tear on the printers or their nozzles (No abrasive additives)
- The filament is not likely to cause maintenance issues (shattering, inconsistent composition)
- The filament is from a well-established brand, and is easy to acquire.
If you want to propose a new filament for approval for use at the lab, please tag @3dprinterteam on slack in the #area-3d-printing channel.
Filaments Prohibited at Kwartzlab
The following materials MUST NOT be printed at Kwartzlab, and there are no plans to allow their use at this time.
Material | Prohibited Reasons |
---|---|
ABS | Strong Fumes |
ASA | Strong Fumes |
Nylon | Strong Fumes, High Temperatures Required, Difficult to print |
Resin | Strong Fumes, PPE Required (Goggles, respirator, gloves), Special Printer Required |
Anything with carbon fiber, metal, glitter, wood, marble effect, or glow in the dark |
Dramatically increased wear on the printers |
The following filaments brands / types are known to cause problems and cannot be used on our printers:
Brand | Material(s) | Prohibited Reason(s) |
---|---|---|
AMZ3D | Any Transparent PLA | Becomes very brittle, and can shatter in the AMS requiring tag out to fix. |
MG Chemicals | All Filament | Bad stringing, poor consistency, frequent clogging requiring tag out to fix. |
For other brands, check the table above - some specific filaments are also prohibited.
If you want to suggest a new brand of filament or material to be evaluated for use at Kwartzlab, please contact the 3D Printing Team to discuss.
